Don’t knock the protein shakes. It is hard to eat enough protein, really hard.
You need to target about 2/3 grams of protein for every lb of your target weight. So if your target is 180lb, then you need about 120 grams a day.
Less than that, your workouts will be less effective and it is more likely you will get smaller muscles, not larger.
You should be able to gain about a lb per week of muscle growth, up to a point. After that, point, it is going to get hard to grow, much less maintain your muscle mass.
