Question by Tina: What would be a suitable lifestyle (nutrition, exercise) for someone with high blood pressure and is overweigh?
My mother is overweight by about 3 stone on medication for high blood pressure and has a sedentary job and you say, they caould have a sedentary lifestyle, as she NEVER exercises. She eats all the wrong foods, too. We are geting a tredmill soon, hopefully it will help. Would she be able to run but it would be the pressure on her heart? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Stop eating out. Start walking. Eat healthy, you HAVE to know what that is. Don’t smoke. Exercise every day, life some light weights at first, gradually go to heavier. Walking and diet is the best way to start. More veggies, more protien, smaller portions, a lot of fruits. Baby steps, all it takes is the first step…then continue on to your goal.

Has your mother lowered her intake of sodium/salt? If her blood pressure is high check with her Dr before doing any treadmill work.

If you love your mom get her a walking stick and commit to walking a mile or starting out 1/2 mile a day. The treadmill is for rainy days as if she doesn’t get in the groove fist walking outside I say she won’t even use it. Walking gets to be a habit. The other thing to do is hook her up with a diet plan. Start off getting her a food journal and daily write down her plan, and then write down each food she eats. Yes she is allowed snacks from an approved list. She could make this plan with you or a dietitian. Get foods she likes on there in appropriate amounts. Go over her journal often with her. Have reward night out and then teach her how to eat out correctly.
