Medical conditions would include
cancer, worms, parasites, liver defects, organ failures, etc In young dogs the reason "failure to thrive" occurs is usually a defect of some sort diagnosed or not. Certain neurological issues can also cause a dog to not eat. DM is a major cause of weight loss too.

Not feeding would be a major cause of weight problems.

Sometimes dogs just get old and don't eat well. Nursing mothers loose weight. Intact males worried about the neighbor's female won't eat sometimes. Low quality food causes weight loss.

Often people jump to conclusions about why a dog is skinny. There are medical reasons in some cases that simply aren't correctly diagnosed.

We have a female German Shepherd that we got when she was a year old, and she was skinny as a rail. Nothing wrong healthwise, she ate just fine (albeit slowly), we went through everything. She was just incredibly hyperactive! She would run her weight off. Now that she's getting older, she's keeping weight on. We have a foster dog, purebred male lab, who is in the same condition. We're trying to get some weight on him, but so far, he's scrawny.

When I read this I started thinking of all the reasons a dog might be "underweight! And they all seemed to fit in one of these catagories! But-- what is underweight? If the dog has no bad medical condition, and it has good nutrition, how could it be seriously underweight?

Stress, not enough food, overexercise, youth, a poor quality food, a change of food, and even if one buys say Canadae for their dog it is not indication that particular dog will do well on it. Every dog, cat, horse and person have a different metabolism from each other even siblings so where one might digest Canadae well another may not and do poorly. Even tho sled dogs are fed a top ration they usually lose weight when on the Iditarod or other long distance race just due to the pressures and constant exercise. In some dog sports where a dog is worked for several hours they are usually kept thin, slightly underweight, to help with their stamina.

I think being underweight is THE medical condition, and the real question is what are the causes of this condition, other than poor nutrition. Of course, that's a long list. Parasites, thyroid problems, hormonal imbalances, problems with the digestive system, cancers, food allergies and intolerances, etc., etc., etc.

I don't know if medical condition falls in this category,
but worms cause dogs to be thin more often then anything else.A fast normal metabolism. The breed is small frame.
My dog got a bite by a wild animal and slowly lost weight and died because there was no cure.It was lock jaw contracted from rabid possums.Crazy ! I Know.
